Frequently Asked Questions

Why get an eye exam when I can see just fine?

A comprehensive eye exam checks a person’s vision and their refractive error (glasses) but also so much more! By examining the outside and inside of your eyes we also check eye muscle balance, focusing, neurological evaluation, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes, cholesterol and hypertension to name a few.

How long does and eye exam take?

Your comprehensive eye exam will take approximately 45-60 minutes. You will likely be dilated for the appointment so don’t forget your sunglasses! Please arrive 5 minutes early check in and to help make the process quicker please fill out your paperwork using this online portal.

What is the difference between a “complete eye exam” and a “medical eye exam?”

A complete eye exam is usually billed to a vision insurance plan and include checking your refraction and your eye health. The result of the exam is a healthy eye with only a refractive error or no refractive error (you need glasses/contacts to see better or you don’t).

A “medical eye exam” is to examine or treat a patient’s eye that has a medical problem such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cataracts, glaucoma, eye infection, a scratch on the eye, keratoconus, and many others. These problems get billed to your medical insurance. Just like car insurance, most insurances have deductibles ranging from $300 to $10,000 per year. If you have not met you deductible for the year, your will be required to pay for your visit just like you would for a hospital bill or a primary doctor bill until you meet your deductible.

Why does my insurance not pay for my refraction (glasses prescription)?

Some insurances will pay for a patient to have an eye health exam but will not pay for the refraction portion of the visit. Medicare is one of them. Some patients choose to pay for this fee out of pocket and others will choose to not update their prescription.

Why do I have to pay for a contact lens evaluation fee every year?

Contact lenses are classified as a class II and class III medical device by the FDA. This makes them regulated by prescription laws just like prescription medications. We look at the fit of your current contacts, new glasses prescription, and your eye health to determine if we need to switch you to another lens or modify the numbers in your current lens brand.

Do you accept Oregon Health Plan (OHP)?

We do accept OHP, and require the patient’s identification number when scheduling an appointment. Medicaid coverage varies by state. In Oregon, If you are over 21 years old, OHP will not pay for glasses or a “complete eye exam” if you have healthy eyes with only a refractive error (need glasses). If you have a medical condition such as diabetes, lupus, dry eye, allergies, eye infection, etc., they will cover your exam portion but not your glasses. They will pay for glasses for anyone younger than 21 and for pregnant women.

Do you repair glasses?

We are able to adjust glasses that have become misaligned and also do minor repairs like replacing nose pads, screws, or a deep cleaning. We can NOT solder materials or take out scratches out of your lenses.
